Holy Souls

Jesus, my Lord, I ask Thee to forgive me all my forgetfulness and neglect of the souls in Purgatory. Deal with me in Thy mercy, lest I should be forgotten as I have forgotten others. From this time, by Thy grace, I will be more steadfast; and I will remember more constantly, in the midst of their pain and suffering, the souls of Thy faithful departed.

Let us say for them: Our Father; Hail Mary.

V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

I

Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory that desire my prayers, though I know it not; I pray for those souls that Thou mayest give them rest.

V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Mary, my Virgin Mother, pray for them.
St. Joseph, pray for them.
St. Michael, pray for them.
St. Peter, pray for them.
St. John the Evangelist, pray for them.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Oh, turn to Jesus, Mother! turn,
And call Him by His tenderest names;
Pray for the Holy Souls that burn
This hour amid the cleansing flames.

II

Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory that have claims upon me, and perhaps I forget them. I may have neglected them, or I may have led them into sin. I pray for those souls that Thou mayest give them rest.

V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Mary, my Virgin Mother, pray for them.
St. Benedict, pray for them.
St. Dominic, pray for them.
St. Francis of Assisi, pray for them.
St. Ignatius Loyola, pray for them.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Ah! they have fought a gallant fight:
In death’s cold arms they persevered;
And after life’s uncheery night,
The arbour of their rest is neared.

III

Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory who did much in the world for sinners, especially for those in mortal sin; I pray for them that Thou mayest give them rest.

V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Mary, my Virgin Mother, pray for them.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

In pains beyond all earthly pains,
Favourites of Jesus! there they lie,
Letting the fire wear out their stains
And worshipping God’s purity.

    IV

    Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory who did much in the world for those in the agony of death; I pray for them that Thou mayest give them rest.

    V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.

    Spouses of Christ they are, for He
    Was wedded to them by His Blood;
    And angels o’er their destiny
    In wondering adoration brood.

    V

    Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory who prayed and laboured much in this world for the holy souls, not forgetting them, but always remembering them in their pain; I pray for those souls that Thou mayest give them rest.

    V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
    R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

    They are the children of thy tears;
    Then hasten, Mother, to their aid;
    In pity think each hour appears
    An age while glory is delayed.

    VI

    Jesus, my Lord, I pray also for those souls who are nearest to their deliverance, particularly for the soldiers, sailors, and airmen fallen in war. In grateful remembrance of their deed of sacrifice, and beseeching Thee that the light of Heaven may soon be theirs, I pray for them that Thou mayest give them rest.

    V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
    R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

    Ah me! the love of Jesus yearns
    O’er the abyss of sacred pain,
    And, as He looks, His bosom burns
    With Calvary’s dear thirst again.

    VII

    Jesus, my Lord, there are souls in Purgatory forgotten and desolate, farthest from deliverance, farthest from the light; I pray for those souls, beseeching Thee by Thy Dereliction and by the Desolation of Thy Virgin Mother, to give them rest.

    V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
    R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

    Mary, my Virgin Mother, pray for them.
    St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for them.
    St. Norbert, pray for them.
    St. Paschal Baylon, pray for them.

    All ye holy Angels, pray for them.
    All ye Saints of God, pray for them.

    Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

    O Mary; let thy Son no more
    His lingering Spouses thus expect;
    God’s children to their God restore,
    And to the Spirit His elect.

      V. Eternal rest give to all these souls, O Lord.
      R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

      Prayer

      O gentlest Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with love for the poor captive souls of Thy children in Purgatory, have mercy, we beseech Thee, on those for whom we pray-our pastors, parents, relatives, friends, and benefactors, and all the neglected or forgotten dead. From the shadows of exile do Thou bring them home to the bliss of Heaven’s perpetual light, Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

      For all the Faithful Departed.

      De Profundis.

      Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;
      Lord, hear my voice!
      O let your ears be attentive to the sound of my pleadings.
      If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
      Lord, who could stand?
      But with you is found forgiveness,
      that you may be revered.
      I long for you, O Lord, my soul longs for his word.
      My soul awaits the Lord
      more than watchmen for daybreak.
      More than watchmen for daybreak,
      let Israel hope for the Lord.
      For with the LORD there is mercy,
      in him is plentiful redemption.
      It is he who will redeem Israel
      from all its iniquities.

      V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord.
      R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

      Let us pray.

      O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Thy servants departed the remission of all their sins; that through pious supplications they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired. Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

      V. May they rest in peace.
      R. Amen.
